The ultimate guide to finding the right mentor.

Finding the right mentor is easy when you know what to look out for; incidentally, most people don't bother with it. Mentors are those who have been to where we want to be, seen what we want to see and above all, have the results that you desire. They, based on their skillset, experience and results, have what it takes to move you to where you want to be. A lot of people call the wrong people mentors. They submit to those they love and begin to see them as mentors. For someone to qualify as a mentor, there are certain qualities that he/she must possess. Mentors are super beings. They help you move ten times faster than you would have moved without them. Due to their experience and expertise, and skill set, they help you develop new abilities, capacity and mastery, but these and more will only happen if you know what to look out for in a mentor.

Here are four things to consider before you choose a mentor:

  1. Discover where you are now in your life.
  2. This is where it starts. You have to take a personal inventory of your state before you think of bringing in a mentor that will help you. Most people are quick to look for guidance without first determining where they need the help. Most times the changes they want don't come because they are either dealing with the wrong things or talking to the wrong person. When you identify where you are, you will be clear on the things to take out and the areas you need to improve upon. This will also greatly determine who you allow to help you as a mentor.

  3. Discover what changes you want to see.
  4. After you have identified where you are, it is easier to identify the changes you want to see. It could be your business, job, personal life, career, marriage, relationship or in your health. You have to discover what it is that you want changed and write it down. This will determine the particular kind of person that you will be considering as a mentor. Mentorship produces the right results if you get it right, but if you don't, you will only waste your time and resources without achieving the desired results.

  5. Your would-be mentor should have the results that you crave.
  6. If your would-be mentor doesn't have the results that you crave, it's most likely that he/she cannot help you achieve yours. You must ensure that you are submitting yourself under someone with the results that you seek. This is very important because if they have not been to where you are going, they cannot take you there. Your mentor must have experienced what you want to experience and have the knowledge that delivers it to you. You don't have to love them, but if they have what you are looking for, you have to embrace them and respect them.

  7. He must be a person of character
  8. If there is one more thing you should consider in your quest of finding the perfect mentor for your next level, it is to look out for a person of character. Little inconsistency here and there on the part of your mentor will also reflect in your own life as the student. You don't want to submit to a mentor that doesn't practice what he or she preaches, that will be gaining theoretical knowledge alone and this will not sustain you when the challenges of life show up. Look out for character. The mentors you consider should exhibit those qualities that you want in their day-to-day living. Most people don't think this is important but it is. Refuse to be under a leader that doesn't exhibit the behaviours that he preaches, they mostly aren't good examples.
