    For funders and program sponsors

Mentorship program evaluation built on real data.

When the programs you fund run on Mently, outcome data is captured as mentoring happens, giving you consistent, comparable evidence instead of end-of-grant anecdotes.

Why mentorship is hard to evaluate

Funders invest in mentorship because it changes lives, but most evaluation still relies on attendance counts and a few success stories collected at the end of the grant. Effective mentorship program evaluation needs data gathered throughout the program, in a consistent format across grantees.

    • Inconsistent reporting

Each grantee measures differently, so programs cannot be compared or aggregated across a portfolio.

    • Activity, not outcomes

Reports show how many sessions happened, not whether participants built the skills the program promised.

    • Evidence arrives too late

Problems surface in the final report, when it is too late to support the grantee or adjust the program.

    Evaluation framework

A practical framework for evaluating mentorship programs

    1. Agree outcomes and indicators upfront

Before the program starts, agree with the grantee which two to four outcomes matter (for example skill gains, milestone completion, employment, or venture progress) and the indicator that will evidence each one.

    2. Capture a baseline

Ask for a baseline assessment of each participant at onboarding. Without it, end-of-program results cannot show change.

    3. Track engagement and quality, not just volume

Session counts matter, but so does whether pairs are engaged and whether mentors are effective. Look for engagement over time and participant feedback on their mentor.

    4. Measure progression at set intervals

Repeat the assessment at the midpoint and end of the program. Progression by individual and by cohort is the strongest evidence a mentorship program can offer.

    5. Standardise the report

Ask every grantee for the same report structure so results can be compared. Programs that run on Mently can export cohort and participant reports from the analytics and outcomes dashboard as PDF or CSV.

    How it works

From agreed outcomes to comparable reports

    1. 01

Step 1: Agree outcomes with the grantee

Lock two to four outcomes and indicators before the program starts.

    2. 02

      Step 2: Capture a baseline

Require a short baseline assessment at onboarding so later results show change.

    3. 03

Step 3: Track as mentoring happens

Engagement, progression, and mentor quality land in one structured dataset.

    4. 04

Step 4: Export a standard report

Grantees share consistent PDF or CSV reports you can compare across the portfolio.

    How Mently helps

Evaluation data your grantees capture as they go

Mently is used by the organisations running the program. Outcome data is a by-product of running it, not an extra reporting task.

    • Lock outcomes before the grant starts

Programs are set up with goals and milestones from day one, aligned to the outcomes you agreed.

    • Prove change against a baseline

Skill progression is measured against a baseline for each participant and across the cohort.

    • Spot which mentors drive participant progress

See which mentors drive the strongest participant progress, using engagement and feedback data.

    • Comparable reports across every grantee

Grantees export reports formatted for funders and boards, filtered by cohort, metric, or date range.

    Who it's for

Evaluation that works for both sides of the grant

    • Funders and foundations

Get comparable evidence from the mentorship programs in your portfolio and make renewal decisions on outcomes.

    • Corporate sponsors and CSR teams

Show leadership what sponsored mentorship programs achieved with clear, structured reporting.

    • Grantee program teams

Meet reporting requirements without the end-of-grant scramble, because the data is already collected.

    • Monitoring & evaluation leads

Work with structured progression data rather than reconciling spreadsheets from different programs.

    Outcomes

What changes when evaluation runs on shared data

    • Comparable evidence across grantees

Portfolio decisions rest on the same outcome types, not incompatible spreadsheets.

    • Earlier course correction

Engagement and progression issues surface during the grant, not only in the final report.

    • Less end-of-grant scramble

Grantees export reports from data already captured while the program ran.

    FAQ

    Mentorship program evaluation questions

What metrics should be used to evaluate a mentorship program?

Combine outcome metrics (skill progression against a baseline, milestone completion, and goals such as employment or venture progress) with quality metrics (engagement over time and participant feedback on mentors). Activity counts like sessions held are useful context but not evidence of impact on their own.

Do funders need a Mently account?

Mently is used by the organisations running the program. Grantees share the reports they generate with you. Book a demo to discuss how reporting could work across your portfolio.

Can grantees use the same report format?

Yes. Programs running on Mently capture the same types of data, so reports can follow a consistent structure across grantees.

    When should evaluation start?

Before the program launches. Agreeing outcomes and capturing a baseline at onboarding is what makes end-of-program results meaningful.
